Youth learning mobility is a powerful way to build intercultural understanding and stronger communities. With co-funding from the Erasmus+ programme, Y‑MED (Youth Mobility in EuroMed) supports youth workers and organisations to develop and run mobility opportunities between Europe and the South Mediterranean—promoting common EU values and helping to challenge stereotypes and xenophobia through learning and exchange.

What is Y‑MED?

Y‑MED is a two-year Erasmus+ KA2 cooperation project delivered by a partnership of organisations from Europe and the South Mediterranean. By working together, partners strengthen their ability to design and deliver high‑quality exchanges, promote active citizenship, and encourage mutual learning and the sharing of good practices across borders.

The projects helps youth workers and organisations strengthen Euro‑Mediterranean youth mobility by building skills, aligning approaches and creating practical resources for intercultural learning. Through cross‑regional cooperation, the project links local initiatives with wider exchange and peer learning across the EuroMed region.

Project goals

At the core of Y‑MED is the goal of strengthening Euro‑Mediterranean youth learning mobility through intercultural learning and cooperation. The project aims to:

• build the capacity of youth workers and organisations to design and deliver mobility experiences between Europe and the South Mediterranean

• promote common EU values and help address discrimination by fostering inclusion, diversity and mutual understanding

• strengthen peer learning and the exchange of good practices between youth work actors across both regions

• support clearer, more consistent communication across the partnership, helping stakeholders engage with the project with confidence and trust.

We believe youth workers and young people can play an active role in building more inclusive communities, and that well-designed learning mobility can contribute to long-term social impact.

Key activities and resources

Key activities drive the project forward, while resources capture and share what we learn

Y‑MED combines capacity-building and cross‑regional cooperation to strengthen youth learning mobility in the Euro‑Mediterranean context. Key activities include:

  • Focus groups and needs analysis to better understand barriers, perceptions and information gaps around Euro‑Mediterranean mobility.
  • Capacity-building activities for youth workers and organisations to strengthen competences for designing and supporting learning mobility.
  • Cross-regional study visits and training events that create space for peer learning and the exchange of good practices.
  • Testing and refining non-formal education activities that can be used in youth work and school contexts to promote EU values and counter discrimination.

Who we are

Study visit in Morocco Y-MED

The Y-MED study visit to Morocco just wrapped up! 17 volunteers and staff from AFS Partners in Slovakia, Czechia, Hungary, Italy, Turkey and Egypt were hosted by ILCS: Institute for Leadership and Communication Studies – an AFS Global Affiliate – in Rabat as a part of the Erasmus+ project ‘Youth Mobility in EuroMed’ (Y-MED). Thank you to the ILCS staff for the warm hospitality! You can learn more about them here.

The study visit aimed at providing the participants with a first discovery of the EuroMed region through cultural immersion, and together discover the opportunities and challenges of youth mobility between the European and South Mediterranean regions. The visit built on the outcomes from the focus groups the project partners have been organising, and the learnings from the study visit will feed into the upcoming Y-MED activities: the EPOT Training for Trainers in Egypt in May, the training for volunteers in Hungary in October, and the anticipated project results.
