EFIL position paper on internationalisation of school education - Building on Europe on the Move recommendations for the future of Erasmus+
Following the Council Recommendation “Europe on the Move”, which outlines how Member States can progress towards realising the EEA, EFIL highlights the need for stronger political will and targeted actions to succeed with internationalisation of school education in a fair, inclusive and quality manner, through a variety of learning opportunities and a whole school approach.
EFIL position paper on the European Commission Proposal for the Erasmus+ programme for the period 2028-2034

We call for the European Commission, Members states and the European Parliament to secure a 5 times increase of the budget for Erasmus+, and in particular a 5 times increase for the school education sector, namely 2,735 million.
This measure will ensure that all youth take part in a diversity of learning mobility opportunities – also longer-term – and that these mobilities contribute to the policy changes aspired by the European Education Area and Union of Skills: increased trust among school systems in Europe and recognition of learning periods abroad in general secondary education.
EU funding for cross-border education and youth
EFIL and its 24 members are beneficiaries of the Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps programmes and have been supporting the EU policies related to cross-border education, training and solidarity, youth since 1971.
In view of the next Multi Financial Framework 2028-2034, we advocate for adequate funding for the development of intercultural and active citizenship competence of young people and educators. Such competences are essential for resilient democracies and for Europe to play a key role in the current global challenges, as recently confirmed by the Union of Skills initiative.
Based on the input received from its Member Organisations, EFIL has prepared a position paper. It includes an Annex explaining how EFIL members work with the Erasmus+ School Programme and which are the benefits of the cooperation between non-profit pupil mobility organisations and schools for supporting the implementation of EU policy priorities (e.g. automatic recognition of learning periods abroad).
Cooperation between schools and pupil mobility organisations
Expanding Learning Mobility
In the frame of the “Expanding Learning Mobility” project, together with our partner organisations we published a Guidebook and a Cooperation Model leaflet aimed at helping schools to cooperate with pupil mobility organisations to effectively promote, support, recognise and leverage this experience, particularly among less advantaged pupils.
Fostering Global Competence among future teachers
Global Competence for Teacher Education
The eBook was developed in the frame of the “Global Competence for Teacher Education” project, and contains resources to help develop future cohorts of teachers who are both globally competent themselves and have the skills to develop global competence in their students.
