From 20-22 March eighteen high school teachers from Serbia and one from Bosnia and Herzegovina gathered in the picturesque small town of Sremski Karlovci to attend AFS Serbia’s teacher training seminar.

In the opening session, the participants discussed international student mobility and shared their own experiences. Other sessions included an introduction on culture, intercultural learning and global education, followed by a presentation on AFS programmes, combined with case studies and lots of practical activities.

The highlight of the seminar was a visit by returnees and exchange students who shared their experiences with the participants. The teachers enjoyed hearing about both the fun and difficult times of the exchange experience. They were also delighted to hear how well the exchange students have learned Serbian.

One of the trainers at the seminar was a volunteer/teacher who attended a similar seminar four years ago. She shared her own experiences of the past four years and the participants were impressed to hear how much she had done – from several class exchange projects, to hosting a student in her own home, to being a local contact person for hosted students in her town, to organising an EVA exchange with ladies from Adana, Turkey, to attending several international AFS events.

We look forward to having new teachers join our volunteer force!
