On 22 October the European Parliament supported the new European Commission with 423 votes in favour, 209 against and 67 abstentions. Even though there were some exceptions, the S&D, EPP and ALDE groups voted in favour to a large extent, while Greens/EFA, GUE/NGL and EFDD voted against. Most of the MEPs from the ECR group abstained.

Mr Tibor Navracsics will keep the education portfolio, as previously anticipated, but the Citizenship has been taken from his portfolio and moved to the portfolio of the Greek Commissioner Dimitris Avramapoulos, who is now the Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship. The new portfolio of Mr Navracsics is now called “Education, Culture, Youth and Sport”. The new Commission has been formally appointed by the EU heads of states and took up duty on 1 November for the five-year term.
